What comes first: wall finishing or stretch ceiling installation?

It might seem that installing a stretch ceiling and finishing the walls are independent processes. However, the correct order is crucial. The main rule is that it’s better to install the stretch ceiling after completing the final wall finish. Why? Let’s take a closer look.

Why finish the walls first?

  • Minimizing the risk of damage. During wall finishing — wallpapering or painting — it’s easy to damage the stretch ceiling. Paint splashes or sharp tools can ruin the material. Installing the stretch ceiling after the walls are finished helps prevent these issues.
  • Optimizing the installation process. Wall finishing is faster when done before the ceiling is installed. You won’t need to protect the ceiling from paint and primer or adjust the wallpaper around the ceiling.
  • Smooth ceiling-to-wall fit. Finished walls ensure a perfect fit between the ceiling and the walls, eliminating gaps or uneven edges, and improving the overall look and quality of the installation.

When to install the stretch ceiling?

  • After the wall finishing but before installing decorative elements. The stretch ceiling should be installed after the wall finishing is complete but before adding decorative items like stone or 3D panels. Uneven surfaces of decorative elements can complicate ceiling installation. It’s better to install the ceiling first and then add decorative panels or stone to achieve a flawless result.
  • Install after checking the utilities. Before installing the ceiling, ensure all necessary utilities — wiring, ventilation, air conditioning — are already installed and functioning properly. A stretch ceiling conceals these elements, and any adjustments afterward will be costly.

What if the ceiling is installed first?

If, for some reason, the stretch ceiling needs to be installed before the wall finishing, it is possible. However, you will need to carefully protect the ceiling from dirt and damage by using film or special protective coverings. While this complicates the finishing process slightly, it ensures that the ceiling remains in perfect condition.

The optimal renovation sequence is to install the stretch ceiling after the final wall finishing. This approach helps avoid many potential issues and ensures a flawless result.
